In March 2023 the European Commission proposed new regulation designed to secure the EU’s access to minerals it views as critical for the energy transition, known as the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). Whilst a quick transition to sustainable forms of energy is key, an Open Letter to the EU warns of risks of the current draft regulation.

The letter signed by over 70 civil society organisations, mainly from countries in the Global South, points out that the CRMA lacks sufficient environmental, social and governance safeguards and the EU’s propagated promotion of value addition in Global South countries may be a mere lip service.

Global Witness has helped coordinating the drafting of the letter with strong input from Global South CSOs.
