Brussels, December 16 - European leaders meeting today look set to miss another critical opportunity to confront the cause of our unprecedented energy crisis and end Europe’s dependence on unreliable and climate-wrecking fossil gas, says Global Witness.

Tara Connolly, senior gas campaigner at Global Witness, said

“EU leaders look set to once again miss the opportunity to address the wider problem of the energy crisis by recognising that unreliable, climate-heating fossil gas is the root cause. Our continued dependence on fossil gas leaves millions of households vulnerable to price shocks, harms Europeans’ health, and is incompatible with a safe climate.”

Energy costs have spiked dangerously for millions across Europe, driven overwhelmingly by an increase in the price of fossil gas imports that Europe cannot control. Almost three quarters of the EU's imports of fossil gas come from Russia. [1]
