At the end of October 2005, the Diamond Development Initiative, co-sponsored by Global Witness, held a first convening meeting in Accra.
The meeting brought together representatives from government, aid agencies, NGOs, the private sector and academia to discuss the plight of Africa’s one million-plus artisanal alluvial diamond miners. Nine African countries were represented, along with participants from Europe, North America, India and Australia.
