The Chinese Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Environmental Protection released their “Guidelines for Environmental Protection in Foreign Investment and Cooperation” on 28th February 2013. The Guidelines cover numerous issues relating to Chinese operations overseas including community relations, environmental policies and legal compliance.
Although non-binding, the Guidelines provide a new means by which communities impacted by Chinese investments and other civil society groups can hold Chinese companies to account.
