Global Witness condemns killing of Maltese journalist

Global Witness condemns the brutal killing of Daphne Caruana Galizia, a journalist who courageously reported on the Panama Papers, organised crime and political corruption in Malta.

Caruana Galizia was reportedly killed in a car bombing near her home. Her work included exposés of the shady secret deals, uncovered in the Panama Papers, that show how politicians and others hide illicit wealth behind secret companies.

“Daphne’s work shone a light on the murky world of offshore finance and her death is a blow to the anti-corruption community,” said Shauna Leven, Director of Global Witness’ Corruption Campaigns, adding: “Democracy dies a death in darkness. Maltese authorities must bring the perpetrators to justice and any investigation should examine – and publicly report on – the reasons behind her death.”

No group or individual has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack according to news accounts at the time of writing. Our thoughts are with her family.

In Solidarity.
