We saw a new warning signal from the moribund South Sudanese economy last week.
Global Witness is calling on Sudan and South Sudan to re-examine and re-invigorate their commitments under the September 27, 2012 Cooperation Agreement, and work with international partners to ensure that oil does not lead to conflict. The call comes in response to the order by the Government of Sudan on June 11 to shut down South Sudanese oil transiting through Sudanese export facilities.
Global Witness welcomes the announcement of an oil deal reached by Sudan and South Sudan, while stressing the need for the final text to ensure transparent implementation.
Sudan and South Sudan’s new oil deal fails to guarantee citizens the basic information they need to hold their governments accountable for the vast amounts of money involved, said Global Witness today.
With six months until a referendum on Southern independence, Sudan is alarmingly unprepared according to a new report published today by a global coalition of 26 humanitarian and human rights organisations. The report calls for urgent action from African heads of state who will meet shortly at a major summit of the African Union in Uganda from 19 - 27 July. Ahead of the summit, international Sudan envoys will meet in Khartoum on 17 July.

The African Union, China, and western governments must push for an immediate resolution to the ongoing oil dispute between Sudan and South Sudan, said Global Witness today. The call comes as the two sides resume talks in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, and amidst heightened tension and talk of war.
