The subject of the UK’s first unexplained wealth order has been revealed as Zamira Hajiyeva, the wife of the former chairman of a state-owned bank in Azerbaijan.
“The government has successfully fought off two legal challenges to the McMafia law this week. But Zamira Hajiyeva’s £22 million town houses are a drop in the ocean – the NCA itself estimates that hundreds of billions of unexplained wealth comes into the UK every year," said Ava Lee, Anti-Corruption Campaigner at Global Witness.
"Now this law been tested in the courts, the government can confidently start rolling out unexplained wealth orders everywhere they are needed.”
