Global Witness condemns the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová

Kuciak and Kušnírová were reportedly killed in their home between Thursday and Saturday. Kuciak, a twenty-seven year old Slovak journalist, had been investigating alleged tax fraud through properties involving businessmen connected to Slovakia’s ruling party. This is the second killing of a journalist investigating corruption in Europe in just six months.

“Journalists should never have to put their lives and the lives of their families on the line to expose corruption and injustice. These brutal murders demonstrate how important and urgent this work remains, right here in Europe,” said Shauna Leven, Director of Global Witness’ Corruption Campaigns.

We stand in solidarity with Kucaik and Kušnírová’s families, and everyone fighting corruption around the world.
