23rd September 2019, London – Commenting on the Prime Minister’s announcement of a fund for climate action, Adam McGibbon, Senior Climate Campaigner at Global Witness, said,
“These Prime Minister’s plans are nowhere near bold enough to deal with the climate emergency. The UK cannot claim to be a climate leader while it plans a massive increase in oil and gas extraction until 2050, and continues to hand out billions of pounds of taxpayers money in subsidies to fossil fuel companies. To have any credibility as hosts of next year’s UN climate summit, the British government need to introduce a managed phase-out of oil and gas, while ensuring high quality, replacement jobs for those affected.”
