Special Military Region

Just south of Ponchentong airport at Wat Tha Kieth a Taiwanese sawmill is obtaining logs from Pursat Province. The logs are debarked, cut to length and loaded as logs into 20’ shipping containers for export to Japan. The Japanese buyers regularly visit the mill. Approximately five containers per month are transported by night along Rte 3, past RCAF Division 70 HQ, the RCAF Engineering HQ and Teng Bunma’s helipad and then towards Sihanoukville on Rte 4.
The mill opened in late 1997/early 1998 and deals only in extremely high value timber species including Beng, Neang Noun, Thnoung and Kanyoun, which probably values the exports at more than $60,000 per month. Log transport to the mill ceased on 6th January, but the transport of the containers from the mill continues.
