Banteay Meanchey
Banteay Meanchey suffers continued instability and disagreement between military, police and officials. There are more than 30 small sawmills in the immediate vicinity of the provincial town. Some of these sawmills produce furniture for local use and for sale in Phnom Penh. Luxury furniture made from Beng species (luxury wood) are made for export to Thailand. "Railway sleepers" continued to be exported to Thailand near to Aranyaprathet until late November 1998. All these exports were illegal.
The Beng is being supplied from Siem Reap Province, possibly from Somroung District, Ban Teay Chhmar, or from the ex-KR near Anlong Veng and also possibly Kompong Thom.
